I listened with great interest Sunday as Dr. Jeff preached about Zacchaeus’ encounter with Jesus in Luke, chapter 19. Zacchaeus was, indeed, a changed person after placing his faith in Christ as evidenced by his behavior. Specifically he said, “I will give half of my possessions to the poor, and if I have cheated anybody out of anything, I will pay him back four times as much!” That’s a radical life change for Zacchaeus!
Perhaps even more powerful than Zacchaeus’ response is the short yet hugely revealing verse 10 where Jesus essentially gives us his own mission statement. “For the Son of Man has come to look for and find those who are lost,” Jesus said. Friends, there could be no happier news than this, for “the lost” includes folks like you and me, as well as everyone with whom we come into contact. Jesus came to look for and find us, so that we, as did Zacchaeus, might place faith in him and be saved.
Maybe the perfect follow-up prayer and commitment for Sunday’s message would be this: “Lord, give me the heart of Jesus that I might also be driven to look for and find those who are lost so that they, like me, can be found by the saving good news of the gospel.”
As we embrace the mission - Changed People, Changing Lives through Jesus Christ - let’s begin with this solid choice to look for and find.
