As far back as I can remember, I have always loved the church. My home church was North End Baptist Church, Port Arthur, Texas where I attended Sunday morning, Sunday night and Wednesday night.
I watched my parents faithfully serve….in the choir, Sunday School, VBS, and committees. I sang in the adult choir when I was twelve and went with my dad to men’s prayer meetings on Saturday nights. On Saturday mornings I would go with a team from our church door-to-door enlisting kids to ride the church van and I can remember going on at least four mission trips to Mexico.
I was a firsthand witness to so many people from our church, making themselves available to serve and reach people for Christ. This small church had a heart for reaching people with the Gospel and these collective experiences made a huge impact on my life.
I’m reminded of one of my favorite Bible passages in Ephesians.
Now to him who is able to do far more abundantly than all that we ask or think according to the power at work within us, to him be glory in the church and Christ Jesus throughout all generations, forever and ever. Amen.
Eph. 3: 20-21
God works through us to build His church for His glory, so that people now and future generations can see the glory of God revealed in His people. The only way this happens is through His power at work within us. It is nothing in and of ourselves and it is not for our glory or recognition. I pray that we will all be reminded that the church is and always has been for His glory.
