Some time ago I read an article about new year’s resolutions. As you might expect, about 80 percent of all new year’s resolutions involve in some way diet and exercise. We “resolve” to break up with Little Debbie and to act on that gym membership.
Unfortunately, so said the article, about 90 percent of those who have made such resolutions have broken them by the end of January!! Ouch! We can’t even seem to make it one month?!! Are we really that weak at the heart?
It’s certainly true that the heart is a hard thing to change. We need help. And the good news is that there is Good News for those who genuinely desire to change the heart. The gospel of Jesus Christ has the power we need to become the children of God. This isn’t like a “New Year’s resolution” or “turning over a new leaf.” This change is so radical and so complete in its reach and structure that the Bible describes it this way: What this means is that those who become Christians become new persons. They are not the same anymore, for the old life is gone. A new life has begun! - 2 Cor. 5:17.
God doesn’t renovate lives, he completely restores them! He doesn’t apply a new coat of paint to a dingy old house, he rebuilds the house from the ground up. And we don’t want it any other way! Praise God the rebuilder, restorer, and lover of our souls!
